Travel & Stay

Arriving on the lake

There are several airports nearby, with the most convenient being:

  • Milan Linate (LIN): Fred’s favourite airport, roughly 1.2 hours drive.

  • Bergamo-Orio al Serio (BGY) : Serving mostly Ryanair flighs, roughly 1 hour travel time.

  • Verona Villafranca (VRN): Another convenient option to the east, roughly 1 hour travel time

Public transport to Lake Garda and Gardone Riviera is limited, so we highly recommend renting a car for an easy and flexible journey.

Discover Lake Garda

Salò

A lovely town to visit and the village where Federica went to highschool: you can explore the MuSa museum, stroll along the lake, and enjoy typical dishes in one of the excellent restaurants. We recommend aperitivo at Bar Italia, and then lunch at L’Orologio.

Gargnano

Our favourite village on the lake, a real hidden gem. We recommend visiting the lemon groves, taking a stroll through the village for a bit of shopping, then having lunch or an aperitif at Aeolus (cousin Filippo’s restaurant). You can also rent a boat at the harbour and take a trip around the lake.

Gardone Riviera

Gardone is the village where the magic will happen. The two main sites you should visit are the Vittoriale degli Italiani, the house-museum of one of the greatest italian poets and intellectuals, which offers an immersion into the culture and history of the lake, while allowing you to stroll through a magnificent park with breathtaking views. We also recommend the André Heller Botanical Garden, an enchanting garden which is absolutely worth a visit.

Day trip Alto Garda

For a day trip, we recommend heading towards the northern part of the lake, in the direction of Limone sul Garda and then Riva del Garda. Along this route, you will find the entrance to the Strada della Forra, a truly spectacular panoramic mountain road, often considered one of the most beautiful in Europe.

This road leads to the village of Tremosine sul Garda, a small hilltop village with magnificent views over the lake, where you can also taste the famous local cheese called “Tremosine”. Once you are up in the hills, we also recommend visiting the Hermitage of Montecastello, a peaceful place with an exceptional panorama.

Then, you can drive back down and continue towards Limone sul Garda, one of the most picturesque villages on the lake, where you can take a walk along the spectacular cycle path suspended above the water.

Finally, continue to Riva del Garda, a charming town located at the northern end of the lake, surrounded by majestic mountains. Once there, we recommend strolling through the historic centre, climbing the Apponale Tower to enjoy the view, visiting the Rocca di Riva, and enjoying a walk along the lakeside or an aperitif in the main square.

Day trip East shore

We also recommend dedicating another day to the eastern shore of the lake.

Start with Malcesine, one of the most beautiful villages on the lake, famous for its magnificent Scaliger Castle. You can stop for lunch at the Re Lear restaurant. From Malcesine, you can then take the Monte Baldo cable car up to Monte Baldo, known as the “Garden of Europe”, where you can enjoy spectacular panoramic views over the entire lake.

On the way back down, continue towards Torri del Benaco, a very picturesque village with its small harbour, medieval castle, and authentic atmosphere. It is the perfect place for a walk and a gelato!

From Torri del Benaco, you can then take the ferry directly to Salò and end the day with a beautiful crossing of the lake before driving back towards the airport.
